My first exposure to the model was in 2008, when I was tasked with implementing elements of it at the ASPIRE Academy in Qatar. Since then, I have applied the model in various leadership positions, including my work in Singapore at the Singapore Sports School, as Performance Director at the German Volleyball Federation, and across multiple consulting mandates.

The EFQM framework has provided valuable guidance in structuring leadership and management approaches, helping organizations align strategy, processes, and results. I also integrate the EFQM Model into my university courses, particularly with my international Master’s students in leadership programs. Understanding and applying this framework is critical for leaders who aim to drive sustainable excellence in their organizations.

Let's get an Overview of the EFQM Model
The EFQM Model is a globally recognized framework for excellence that helps organizations assess their performance, implement improvement strategies, and achieve sustainable success.
The model is built on seven key criteria, divided into two main sections:

Direction (How the organization sets its purpose and strategy):

Purpose, Vision & Strategy

Organizational Leadership & Culture

Engaging Stakeholders

Execution (How the organization operates to achieve results):

Creating Sustainable Value

Driving Performance & Transformation

Results (What the organization achieves in performance and perception):

Stakeholder Perception

Strategic & Operational Performance

These criteria guide organizations in defining clear leadership, setting the right priorities, and ensuring that performance measures align with long-term strategic goals. The model does not prescribe a fixed approach, allowing flexibility for leaders to adapt it to their organizational context.

Leadership in the EFQM Context

Good leadership in the EFQM Model is defined by:

Creating a clear vision and purpose. Leaders must articulate the organization’s mission and ensure alignment across all levels.

Setting the cultural tone. A leader’s ability to shape values, behaviors, and engagement plays a crucial role in an organization’s success.

Engaging and empowering people. Leaders should inspire teams, provide them with opportunities for growth, and ensure open communication.

Focusing on stakeholder needs. Good leadership in EFQM is customer-centric, emphasizing collaboration with employees, partners, and the broader community.

Driving continuous improvement. Leaders should foster a learning culture, where innovation and adaptation are encouraged.

The Role of Leadership in Driving Excellence
Within the EFQM framework, leaders are responsible for setting direction, fostering collaboration, and enabling performance transformation. Successful leadership requires balancing strategic decision-making with operational execution, ensuring that an organization remains resilient and forward-looking.

Some key areas where leaders must excel include:

Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility: Ensuring that business strategies contribute to a sustainable future.

Innovation & Agility: Responding effectively to change, fostering new ideas, and integrating technological advancements.

Performance Monitoring & Evaluation: Establishing clear KPIs, measuring progress, and continuously optimizing business processes.

Case Study: Applying EFQM Leadership in a Sports Organization
A national sports federation aiming to enhance athlete development and competition results can benefit greatly from EFQM leadership principles. By creating a clear vision, the federation ensures that all stakeholders—coaches, athletes, and sponsors—align with long-term goals. A strong leadership culture fosters innovation in training methods and improves athlete engagement.
For example, applying stakeholder engagement strategies can enhance collaboration between sports science experts and performance coaches, ensuring that decisions are based on data-driven insights. The continuous improvement mindset encourages feedback loops, refining competition strategies and athlete development programs. Additionally, implementing performance monitoring systems allows real-time tracking of athlete progress and resource allocation, ensuring operational efficiency.
By integrating EFQM principles, a sports organization can achieve sustainable success, enhance stakeholder satisfaction, and develop a culture that fosters excellence in both administration and athletic performance.

Conclusion:
Leadership within the EFQM framework is about much more than just management and operations—it’s about creating a culture of excellence, fostering collaboration, and driving long-term sustainable success. As I have seen through my professional experience, applying the EFQM model helps leaders structure their vision, enhance stakeholder engagement, and implement strategies that drive organizational growth.

By integrating quality management principles into leadership, organizations can ensure that they are not just meeting today’s demands but are also future-proofing their success. In my leadership courses, I continue to explore how modern leaders can leverage EFQM to develop high-performance cultures and resilient organizations.

For those looking to deepen their leadership knowledge, the EFQM framework provides a solid foundation to build effective leadership strategies for any industry.

March 07th, 2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/march-07th-2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/march-07th-2025#comments

Business Development

Fitness

Health

Sportevents

How the Middle East Fitness Market evolves In one of my university courses, I regularly cover the topic of new markets in the health and fitness industry as well as internationalization. Following my last article about the rise of the
health & fitness industry in Asia, this analysis explores the latest trends in the Middle East.
This article is based on a survey conducted by Gymnation, an operator of fitness events in the region, as well as an analysis of governmental policies in Qatar, Dubai, and KSA, along with personal insights and interviews with key stakeholders in the region.

Having lived and worked for five years in Qatar with my family, I witnessed firsthand how sports and fitness were still in their infancy at the time - back in 2005-2010. Fitness clubs were primarily catering to expats rather than locals, and the concept of structured fitness training was only beginning to take shape. My role as Head Coach for Athletics at ASPIRE Academy gave me a unique perspective on how governments were starting to integrate sports into education, recognizing that not all junior athletes would become Olympic champions—but at the very least, they would understand the lifelong benefits of regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

Fast forward to today, and the Middle East’s fitness landscape has completely transformed. Countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia are now at the forefront of promoting active lifestyles, public health initiatives, and fitness accessibility. The latest UAE & KSA Health & Fitness Report 2025 by GYMNATION, a gym operator in the region, highlights just how much progress has been made, with fitness participation skyrocketing across the region, but at the same time leaving some space for further development.

Key Insights: A Growing Fitness Culture

1. A Strong Desire for Healthier Lifestyles
92% of respondents in KSA and the UAE want to improve their health—a significantly higher percentage than in the UK (76%) and the USA (75%). Additionally, 64% have improved their health over the past year, while 26% have maintained their fitness levels. This reflects a shifting mindset in the region, with more individuals embracing fitness as a long-term commitment.

2. A Boom in First-Time Gym-Goers
Over 56% of people in Saudi Arabia and 58% in the UAE did not have a gym membership in the previous 12 months, yet 82% say they are at least somewhat active. This means that more people are engaging in physical activity, even if they are not part of a traditional gym environment.
The market is experiencing rapid growth, with low-cost gym memberships expected to increase by 30-45% annually over the next five years. This trend mirrors the fitness boom in the UK between 2011 and 2019, when affordable gym models expanded the fitness sector significantly.

3. Affordability and Accessibility Remain Key Barriers
While enthusiasm for fitness is at an all-time high, challenges remain. The report highlights that cost is the biggest factor preventing people from joining gyms, with 51% in KSA and 53% in the UAE stating that gym memberships are too expensive.
It is worth noting that Dubai and Riyadh rank among the world's most expensive cities for gym memberships, surpassing London and New York. However, the rise of budget-friendly, high-quality gym options is expected to make fitness more accessible to a broader audience.

4. Mental Well-Being and Fitness Are Closely Linked
The report confirms that fitness is not just about physical health—92% of respondents value exercise for mental well-being and stress reduction. Additionally, nearly half of gym-goers see the gym as a social space, forming friendships and finding motivation within a supportive community.

5. Technology and Digital Fitness Are on the Rise
More than 60% of people in KSA and the UAE use wearable fitness technology, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, to monitor their workouts. Additionally, there is growing interest in virtual fitness programs, AI-driven coaching, and hybrid workout models that combine in-person and digital training.

Government-Led Initiatives Driving Fitness Growth
One of the most remarkable aspects of this transformation is the role of government policies. The UAE's Dubai Fitness Challenge and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 are prime examples of how national strategies can successfully encourage a more active population. These initiatives not only promote personal well-being but also contribute to economic growth by supporting the fitness industry.
Saudi Arabia, in particular, is experiencing one of the fastest fitness market growth rates in the world (16.8% CAGR from 2020-2023), with women’s participation in gyms increasing at an even faster rate than men’s due to recent policy changes.

What’s Next for the Fitness Industry in the Middle East?
The findings suggest a bright future for the fitness sector in the Gulf Region. To sustain this growth, affordability, accessibility, and education will be key. More budget-friendly gyms, increased public workout spaces, and fitness education programs will ensure that people not only join gyms but continue their fitness journey long-term.
From my own experience, I have seen firsthand how public health programs and initiatives can positively impact communities in the region. It’s exciting to see the Middle East embracing a fitness-driven future, where health and wellness are becoming a priority for all.

Outlook
The Middle East is at a pivotal moment in its health and fitness evolution. With strong government backing, increasing accessibility to fitness facilities, and a growing cultural shift towards active living, the region is setting new benchmarks for public health and fitness engagement.
Looking ahead, the challenge will be to maintain this momentum by ensuring fitness remains inclusive and sustainable. As affordability improves and digital fitness solutions continue to grow, even more people will be able to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

For fitness professionals, educators, and policymakers, this is an opportunity to further drive engagement and create long-term, sustainable health solutions.

One of the most exciting developments in the region has been the rise of fitness racing, with HYROX leaving its footprint in the UAE and Qatar. With successful events in Dubai and Doha, and an upcoming HYROX event in Sharjah in April 2025, it is clear that fitness racing is rapidly gaining popularity.
The concept of combining running with functional workouts has caught the attention of policymakers and fitness enthusiasts alike, making it a key driver in the region’s evolving fitness culture.

The future of fitness in Gulf region is bright—and I am excited to see how this remarkable transformation unfolds.

What are your thoughts on the region’s growing fitness movement? Based on extensive market research and three decades of experience in Olympic sports management, followed by five years of focused analysis in the commercial fitness sector, several key strategic insights emerge.

Market Overview and Growth Trajectory

The Asian fitness market demonstrates remarkable growth potential, with two key markets leading the transformation. India's fitness sector is projected to reach $6 billion by 2025, while China's market already exceeds $10 billion. These figures represent not merely economic expansion but a fundamental shift in consumer behavior and market dynamics.

Strategic Market Drivers

Three primary factors are driving this market evolution:

1. Digital Integration
The emergence of platforms like Keep (China) and CureFit (India) illustrates successful digital transformation strategies in the fitness sector. These platforms have effectively addressed urban infrastructure challenges while meeting evolving consumer preferences for convenience and accessibility.

2. Cultural Integration
Success in these markets requires strategic integration of traditional wellness practices with modern fitness methodologies. Companies that have effectively balanced this cultural equation, particularly in product development and service delivery, have achieved significant market penetration.

3. Regulatory Framework
China's "Healthy China 2030" initiative demonstrates how government policy can create favorable market conditions through public-private partnerships, offering a replicable model for market development.

Market Opportunities and Challenges
The market presents significant opportunities for strategic investment and innovation, particularly in:
- Digital fitness solutions adapted to local preferences
- Hybrid business models combining traditional and modern approaches
- Infrastructure development addressing urban density challenges

However, key challenges include:
- Market fragmentation, particularly in India
- Regulatory complexity in China
- Need for localized content and service delivery

Strategic Recommendations

For stakeholders seeking to enter or expand in these markets:

1. Invest in deep local market understanding
2. Develop adaptive business models
3. Focus on technology integration while maintaining cultural authenticity
4. Build strategic partnerships with local entities

Future Market Outlook
The Asian fitness market is poised for continued growth, driven by digital innovation, rising health awareness, and increasing disposable income. Success will depend on stakeholders' ability to deliver integrated solutions that resonate with local consumer preferences while leveraging global fitness trends.

For more insights into Sports, Training Business and Research please explore the offerings at the Ralf Iwan Academy.

February 21st, 2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/february-21st-2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/february-21st-2025#comments

Fitness

Hyrox

From Zero to HYROX:Your Fitness Journey with Dirk Steiner I am happy to have my training partner and colleague Dirk Steiner on my Ralf Iwan Academy as an author, bringing his wealth of knowledge and experience to help others embark on their HYROX journey.HYROX is more than just a fitness race; it’s a movement. It’s a mindset and a practice, rooted in the belief that our bodies and minds are capable of thriving, no matter our age, if we treat them with care and respect.

As someone who has spent nearly 30 years working in the world of sports and performance—and who now, at 58, remains an active and sporty individual—the concept of longevity resonates deeply with me. I’ve seen firsthand how athletes, colleagues, and friends adapt their lives to prioritize their long-term health and find ways to stay vibrant, even after their competitive or professional peaks.

Take Peter, for example, a friend and former high-level athlete who embodies this concept beautifully. In his prime, Peter was a fierce competitor, pushing his body to the edge to achieve top results in his chosen discipline. However, like many athletes, his relentless pursuit of success came at a cost. By his late 40s, years of wear and tear began to catch up with him. Persistent injuries, coupled with the demands of aging, left Peter sidelined, and he believed his active years were behind him.

But instead of accepting this as his reality, Peter decided to pivot. He immersed himself in the principles of longevity, gradually adopting practices that prioritized his overall well-being. He began with low-impact exercises like swimming and cycling, complementing them with targeted strength training to rebuild muscle and protect his joints. He shifted his nutrition, focusing on anti-inflammatory foods and proper hydration, and incorporated mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation to enhance his mental clarity and reduce stress.

The transformation was remarkable. By the time Peter turned 60, he wasn’t just healthier—he was thriving. He no longer viewed aging as a limitation but as an opportunity to redefine what was possible. Today, he participates in community fitness events, mentors younger athletes, and lives with a renewed sense of purpose.

Longevity isn’t just for athletes or fitness enthusiasts. It’s for anyone who wants to make the most of their years, regardless of their starting point. The key lies in a few foundational principles: consistent movement, balanced nutrition, mental resilience, and a commitment to recovery. These pillars don’t just prevent decline; they actively enhance one’s capacity to enjoy life.

For me, the concept of longevity has become a personal journey. While I still set goals for physical performance, my perspective has evolved. It’s no longer about chasing records or enduring grueling routines but about maintaining a balance that allows me to stay active, mentor others, and embrace life’s challenges with energy and optimism.

Longevity isn’t a quick fix or a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s a deeply personal process, shaped by individual needs, preferences, and circumstances. It’s about recognizing that age is just a number and that with the right mindset and habits, we can continue to thrive at every stage of life. Whether you’re 25 or 58, like me, the pursuit of longevity offers an inspiring path to a healthier, more fulfilling future.

For more insights into Sports, Training, Health, Management and Research I invite you to explore the offerings at the Ralf Iwan Academy.

February 06th, 2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/february-06th-2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/february-06th-2025#comments

Fitness

The 7 Biggest Fitness Myths—And What Science Really Says Every year, as I set new personal and professional goals, I reflect on my fitness journey as well. Over the years, I’ve learned to separate fact from fiction, especially when it comes to exercise. But misinformation still runs rampant in the fitness world, leading many people down ineffective or even harmful paths.

So, let’s bust some of the most common fitness myths, using insights from leading experts like Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse and other sports scientists.

1. Jogging Wrecks Your Knees
Many people avoid jogging out of fear that it will destroy their knees. While it’s true that improper running technique or overtraining can cause issues, regular jogging actually strengthens the muscles around your knees and helps reduce the risk of osteoarthritis.
A study by Stanford University supports this, showing that runners are no more likely to develop knee problems than non-runners. The key is proper technique, good footwear, and gradual progression. So, lace up your sneakers and enjoy the benefits of running without fear!

2. Stretching Before Exercise Prevents Injuries
You’ve likely seen people doing deep stretches before workouts, thinking it helps prevent injuries. However, static stretching before exercise can actually weaken muscles temporarily and doesn’t significantly reduce injury risk.
Instead, experts like Dr. Heiner Bucher recommend dynamic warm-ups, which prepare your muscles by mimicking the movements you’ll perform during your workout. Think lunges, arm swings, or gentle squats—your body will be much better prepared for exercise.

3. More Exercise Equals More Weight Loss
It’s tempting to believe that the more time you spend exercising, the more weight you’ll lose. But weight loss isn’t just about exercise—it’s about nutrition.
Dr. Bucher points out that many people overestimate how many calories they burn while exercising and underestimate what they eat. Sustainable weight loss comes from a balanced approach—regular workouts combined with a mindful, whole-food diet.

4. No Pain, No Gain
“Push through the pain” is a common gym mantra, but it’s misleading. Pain isn’t a sign of an effective workout—it’s often a warning.
Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse from the German Sport University Cologne explains that while mild soreness after a workout is normal (delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS), sharp or persistent pain signals overtraining or improper technique. Listen to your body—growth happens when you challenge yourself, not when you push to the point of injury.

5. Spot Reduction Works
Want six-pack abs? Doing endless crunches won’t burn belly fat! The idea that you can target fat loss in specific areas is a persistent myth.
According to the American Council on Exercise, fat loss happens systemically—your body decides where to burn fat based on genetics. The best approach? A combination of full-body strength training, cardio, and proper nutrition to reveal those toned muscles.

6. Strength Training Makes Women Bulky
Many women avoid lifting weights for fear of becoming "too muscular." The truth? Strength training is one of the best ways to tone, strengthen, and boost metabolism.
Dr. Christine Graf emphasizes that hormonal differences prevent women from easily building large muscles. Instead, strength training improves muscle tone, bone density, and overall health, making it an essential part of any fitness routine.

7. Rest Days Are for the Weak
Think skipping rest days makes you stronger? Think again. Recovery is where muscle growth and progress actually happen.
Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse highlights that muscles need time to repair and adapt. Overtraining leads to burnout, injuries, and decreased performance. Incorporating rest and active recovery days (like yoga or light movement) keeps your body strong and ready for the next challenge.
Final Thoughts

Misconceptions about fitness can derail even the best intentions. But by staying informed and listening to expert advice, we can train smarter and achieve better results.
And as I’ve personally learned (sometimes the hard way), as we age, recovery becomes even more crucial. The days of bouncing back instantly after a tough workout are long gone! Now, I sometimes need a "strategic nap" after an intense session, and I’ve made peace with the fact that my body needs a little extra time to recover. Trust me, pushing through fatigue only leads to setbacks.
Your Next Steps

Ready to apply these lessons? Here’s how:
Start your workouts with a dynamic warm-up.
Create a balanced fitness plan that includes strength training, cardio, and rest days.
Pair your workouts with a nutritious diet tailored to your goals.
Seek advice from certified trainers or medical professionals to ensure proper technique and avoid injuries.

Personally, I love my long runs around the lake near my house or going for a long swim to enhance my aerobic capacity. It’s a fantastic way to challenge my endurance while enjoying nature.
Fitness is a lifelong journey, and the road is much smoother when paved with knowledge and good habits. Ditch the myths, trust the science, and enjoy the process of becoming the best version of yourself!

February 5th, 2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/january-29th-2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/january-29th-2025#comments

Uncategorized

How Healthy Nutrition Can Extend Your Lifespan by 13 Years Many people start the year with new resolutions to live healthier, eat better, and exercise more. Whether it’s hitting the gym, walking more, or simply being more mindful of daily habits, one critical factor that plays a key role in overall well-being is nutrition. This is especially important as we age. Over the past years, I have looked into this topic, and today, I want to share some insights on how diet influences aging and longevity.

And speaking of aging—suddenly, I find myself approaching 60! I’m not quite sure how that happened so quickly, but here we are. As this milestone looms closer, I’ve taken an even deeper dive into how nutrition impacts aging, and I must say, the findings are fascinating (and a little motivating!).
Unhealthy eating habits can contribute to various diseases. So, how should we adjust our diet as we age? What role does nutrition play in longevity? And why might protein pizza not be as beneficial as it seems? Let’s dive into these topics and explore the science behind healthy aging.

Should We Eat Differently at 50 Than at 30?
As we age, our bodies undergo significant changes. Around the age of 60, lean body mass starts to decline. This means we lose muscle mass, organ mass, and bone density, while fat tissue tends to increase. Unfortunately, this is not an ideal shift in body composition. More muscle and less fat provide the best foundation for physical performance and overall health.
So, does this mean we are destined to become weaker and gain weight as we age? Not necessarily, but many people continue eating as they always have, despite becoming less active. With muscle loss comes a reduced resting energy expenditure, meaning the body burns fewer calories. In an ideal scenario, we would consume fewer calories while ensuring we get enough essential nutrients—something that becomes increasingly challenging with age.

What Are the Key Aging Processes That Affect Our Diet?
Aging is driven by a series of biological mechanisms known as the Hallmarks of Aging, identified by researchers over the past decade. These include factors such as genetic instability, mitochondrial dysfunction, and stem cell exhaustion. Over time, molecular damage accumulates, and the body struggles to repair it. This leads to cellular dysfunction, including the deterioration of mitochondria (the cell’s powerhouse), which plays a crucial role in muscle maintenance and overall energy levels.
This biological decline is closely linked to diet. Poor nutrition can accelerate muscle loss and frailty, increasing the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and metabolic disorders. But does this mean we are helpless in the face of aging? Absolutely not! Scientific research shows that a combination of regular physical activity and an anti-inflammatory diet can significantly slow down the aging process.

What Does an Anti-Aging Diet Look Like?
A plant-based diet is key. This doesn’t mean eliminating animal products entirely, but it does mean emphasizing vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Such a diet helps regulate fat accumulation and reduces the risk of metabolic disorders like obesity, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance.
One of the biggest threats in aging is chronic inflammation, often referred to as "inflammaging". This persistent low-grade inflammation is partly due to an aging immune system and is linked to conditions such as cardiovascular disease and muscle deterioration.
Unfortunately, the typical Western diet is highly inflammatory. It contains excessive amounts of saturated fats, processed meats, salt, refined carbohydrates, and ultra-processed foods. These dietary habits contribute to inflammation by increasing fat tissue, which in turn releases cytokines, proteins that promote inflammation.

Should We Avoid Meat Altogether?
Not necessarily. A plant-based diet doesn’t mean a completely vegetarian or vegan approach. Studies show that reducing meat consumption has clear health benefits, but the primary focus should be on increasing nutrient-dense plant foods. Fruits and vegetables provide polyphenols and carotenoids, powerful antioxidants that protect against cancer and other diseases.
A Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, legumes, fish, nuts, and olive oil, is particularly effective in promoting longevity. Research has demonstrated that this diet reduces inflammation, supports a healthy body composition, and provides a range of essential micronutrients.

Is It Ever Too Late to Change Our Diet?
It is never too late to improve eating habits. A major study found that adopting a healthy diet at age 20 can increase lifespan by up to 13 years. However, even if someone makes dietary changes at age 60, they can still gain up to nine extra years of life expectancy. The key takeaway is that small improvements—such as choosing fish over red meat and whole grains over refined carbs—can have significant health benefits.

Can Supplements Replace a Healthy Diet?
Many people wonder if simply taking supplements could provide the same benefits as a healthy diet. The answer is no. While some phytochemicals, such as carotenoids, have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, consuming them in isolation through supplements may actually be harmful. Some studies suggest that high doses of isolated nutrients can have pro-oxidative effects, meaning they could potentially increase the production of harmful free radicals rather than reduce them.
Instead, consuming nutrients in their natural food form allows the body to process them more effectively while also supporting gut health.

How Does Diet Affect Our Gut Microbiome?
The gut microbiome—a complex system of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in our intestines—has emerged as a crucial factor in aging and overall health. A diverse and healthy gut microbiome influences immune function, brain health, and muscle maintenance. Research has even linked an imbalanced microbiome to accelerated aging.

So, how can we improve gut health?
Prebiotic foods (such as legumes, berries, and asparagus) feed beneficial gut bacteria.
Probiotic foods (such as yogurt and fermented foods) introduce beneficial bacteria into the gut.
A fiber-rich diet supports microbiome diversity, reducing inflammation and enhancing nutrient absorption.

What Nutrients Do We Need More of As We Age?
Older adults have unique nutritional needs. One key concern is protein intake. While younger adults require 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, those over 65 need 1.0 to 1.5 grams per kilogram to prevent muscle loss and frailty. Maintaining muscle mass helps prevent falls, fractures, and hospitalizations.
Interestingly, while excessive protein intake is linked to increased mortality in younger individuals (particularly from red meat and processed animal products), it becomes more important in later years. This is because animal protein closely resembles human muscle protein, making it particularly effective for maintaining strength in older adults.

Final Thoughts
Aging is inevitable, but how we age is largely in our control. By prioritizing a plant-focused diet, maintaining an active lifestyle, and ensuring proper nutrient intake, we can reduce inflammation, support muscle health, and potentially extend our lifespan.
So, what are your thoughts? Have you considered making changes to your diet as you age? What challenges do you foresee in adopting a healthier lifestyle?

January 30th, 2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/january-30th-2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/january-30th-2025#comments

Uncategorized

Kicking Off a Sporty 2025: HYROX Doubles Back in 2021, I took on my first HYROX event, and since then, I’ve completed six Single Open races and two Doubles. But this time was special! To kick off 2025 in the most epic way possible, my wife and I teamed up for our first HYROX Doubles in Manchester, and what a ride it was!

A Deal Was Made
Now, let’s be honest—my wife was not exactly thrilled about the idea of doing a HYROX event. She had always been skeptical about the stress of competition, but after some negotiations, we struck a deal. I would take care of all the workouts—every single sled push, row, and burpee broad jump—while we would run the eight 1-kilometer stretches together at her pace. She dictated the tempo, and I just had to keep up.
And with that, we found ourselves at the HYROX Manchester event, surrounded by an incredible community of athletes, volunteers, and judges who created an atmosphere of support, excitement, and pure sportsmanship.

The HYROX Experience—More Than Just a Race
Manchester holds a special place in our hearts. During my time as Regional Performance Manager at UK Athletics, our family lived in the High Peak, just outside the city. Returning here for such an event added another layer of nostalgia and excitement.
From the moment we arrived, the energy in the air was electric. The HYROX UK community welcomed us with open arms, proving once again that this sport truly is for everyone—from elite competitors aiming for record times to first-timers just hoping to cross the finish line.
The volunteers were fantastic, offering words of encouragement at every station. The judges were supportive, ensuring that everyone met the standards but also cheering us on as we powered through each challenge. There were no egos—just a shared determination to finish strong.

Crossing the Finish Line—And What Comes Next?
As we ran our final kilometer, side by side, I could see it in my wife’s face: pride, determination, and a sense of accomplishment. She had done something she never imagined she would. And as we crossed the finish line, it was official—she was now part of the HYROX family.
So, will we do another HYROX Doubles together? Well, let’s just say I’ll have to ask her again next year... but I might have to sweeten the deal this time!

Why HYROX is a Sport for Everyone
This experience reinforced something I’ve always believed—HYROX is one of the most scalable fitness competitions in the world. Whether you’re aiming for maximum performance or just looking to finish the race, this sport meets you where you are. It’s about progress, camaraderie, and pushing yourself in ways you never thought possible.
And no matter your goal—whether it’s improving your time, completing your first event, or simply staying active—there’s a place for you in the HYROX community.

Ready for Your Own HYROX Challenge?
If you’ve been on the fence about trying HYROX, let this be your sign. Grab a friend, set a goal, and step onto that competition floor. You might just surprise yourself with what you’re capable of.
So, what’s your next big fitness challenge?

January 08th, 2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/january-08th-2025

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/january-08th-2025#comments

Fitness

New Years Resolution At the start of each year, many of us set ambitious goals: exercising more, eating healthier, or going to bed earlier. Yet, despite our best intentions, we often struggle to maintain these new habits. So, how can we effectively initiate and stick to our desired changes?

Personally, I go through this process every year—reviewing my past goals and setting new ones as the year comes to an end. Over time, I’ve found it easier to achieve my goals and stick to strategies that work. But why is that? What does research say about how we can improve our ability to stay committed? Let’s explore!

The Two-Part Plan for Success
According to psychologist Peter Gollwitzer, a good plan consists of two essential components:
Goal Setting: Clearly define what you want to achieve. For example, instead of a vague aim like "I want to get fit," specify, "I will jog for 30 minutes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7 AM."

Implementation Intentions: Develop concrete plans that outline when, where, and how you will perform the behavior. This involves creating "if-then" scenarios, such as, "If it rains on my jogging day, then I will do a 30-minute indoor workout instead."

Why Do We Often Fail to Stick to Our Goals?
Gollwitzer explains that while setting goals is crucial, it's not sufficient on its own. Many people fail because they don't anticipate obstacles or plan for them. By establishing implementation intentions, you're better prepared to handle challenges and stay committed to your objectives.

The Power of "If-Then" Planning
"If-Then" plans help automate our responses to specific situations. For instance:
If I feel too tired after work to exercise, then I will do a short 10-minute workout to maintain the habit. If I encounter unhealthy snacks at a party, then I will choose a smaller portion or opt for healthier alternatives.
These predetermined responses reduce the mental effort required to make decisions in the moment, increasing the likelihood of sticking to your goals.
Overcoming Common Obstacles
It's natural to face hurdles when trying to adopt new habits.

Here are some strategies to overcome common challenges:
Lack of Time: Schedule your activities as non-negotiable appointments in your calendar.
Loss of Motivation: Remind yourself of the reasons behind your goal and visualize the benefits of achieving it.
Unexpected Events: Have backup plans in place. For example, if you miss a workout, plan an alternative session later in the week.

Final Thoughts
Achieving your goals requires more than just motivation; it demands strategic planning and foresight. By clearly defining your objectives and setting detailed implementation intentions, you can navigate obstacles and stay on track. This year, I had the privilege of teaching the MBA Leadership & Management Course at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences in Berlin, where I welcomed over 50 students from more than 12 countries.

A Dynamic and Engaging Course

One of the things that made this semester so special was the diversity of perspectives brought by the students. Leadership is a concept that varies across cultures, industries, and personal experiences, making the discussions in our course rich, insightful, and thought-provoking.

Throughout the semester, we explored Leadership Styles in connection with Organisational Excellence and Structures, diving deep into what makes a great leader and how leadership frameworks impact business success.

We also tackled Sustainable Business Models, analyzing how companies today are integrating sustainability into their core strategies—not just as a trend, but as a foundation for long-term success. Social Performance was another crucial topic, as leadership in the 21st century goes beyond financial success and requires a commitment to people and the planet.

Case Studies and Practical Insights

Case studies were at the heart of our learning experience. From analyzing successful sustainable business strategies to real-life change management scenarios, students had the chance to apply theory to real-world challenges.

A key part of the course was Change Management in Organizations, where students examined transformational leadership, resistance to change, and strategies for overcoming it. The final project put all of these elements into practice—students worked on their own strategies for a change process in the Upper Lusatia region, a part of Germany undergoing a major structural transformation.

A Semester of Growth and Inspiration

Looking back, this semester was filled with engaging discussions, insightful presentations, and meaningful collaboration. Seeing students take on complex leadership challenges with confidence and creativity was truly inspiring.

Leadership is an evolving journey, and it has been a pleasure to guide my students through some of the key principles that will help them lead with impact in their future careers.

So, as we wrap up this semester, I ask: What does leadership mean to you? How do you see yourself leading change in the future? Let’s continue the conversation and keep learning together!

November 02nd, 2024

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/one-of-the-most-impactful-ways-to-live-longer-achieving-high-fitness-levels

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/one-of-the-most-impactful-ways-to-live-longer-achieving-high-fitness-levels#comments

Uncategorized

There are countless recommendations out there for living longer and healthier. But as Dr. Paddy Barrett, a cardiologist, points out, the key factor with the biggest impact may surprise you. While many people focus on supplements, special diets, and new wellness trends, the single most effective thing you can do is achieve and maintain a high level of fitness. This isn’t as easy as a quick health hack, but the data is overwhelming in showing that high fitness levels dramatically lower the risk of early death and improve overall quality of life.

The Power of Choice in Health
When patients ask what they can do to live longer, they want actionable steps they can take themselves. Although lifestyle choices can seem endless, high fitness levels have consistently shown a strong impact on long-term health. For instance, while filtering drinking water or reducing blue light exposure can provide minor benefits, they don’t compare to the effects of improving fitness. It’s a bit like trying to bail out the Titanic with a bucket when a much larger, more effective solution is at hand. Focusing on “major things” like fitness provides a far greater return on investment for health and longevity.

The Clear Impact of High Fitness
Research comparing people with the highest fitness levels to those with the lowest has shown remarkable reductions in the risk of various serious conditions:

Death from any cause: 53% lower risk

Heart disease: 51% lower risk

Cancer: 43% lower risk

High blood pressure: 37% lower risk

Heart failure: 69% lower risk

Dementia: 64% lower risk

Kidney disease: 42% lower risk

Depression: 39% lower risk

These numbers highlight a powerful truth: fitness can safeguard against some of the biggest threats to our health. No other single lifestyle change offers such broad protection against these critical health risks.

Fitness is Hard, But Worth It
Achieving high fitness levels isn’t easy, and that’s one reason many people overlook it in favor of simpler, less demanding health tips. Developing true aerobic fitness takes time and requires continuous effort, but even moderate fitness improvements make a substantial difference. Fitness is often measured in metabolic equivalents, or METs, which gauge energy expenditure during activities. Increasing fitness by just 1 MET (equivalent to a brisk walk) can reduce death risk by 11-17%, heart disease risk by 13-17%, and cancer risk by 7%.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to reach extreme fitness levels to experience benefits. Regular walks or other low-impact exercises can be a great starting point, leading to lasting improvements in health without requiring marathon-level exertion.

Why Exercise is So Effective
Exercise impacts nearly every organ in the body, leading to a range of benefits:

Improved insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation

Increased muscle mass, which supports metabolism and reduces injury risk

Enhanced immune surveillance, helping the body to detect and fight diseases

Greater mitochondrial function, promoting cellular energy

Improved neuroplasticity, which aids brain health and cognitive function

Stronger cardiac contractility for better heart health

Increased bone density and reduced inflammation

In short, exercise doesn’t just target one area; it has widespread benefits that improve resilience across many physiological systems. This is why exercise is often referred to as a “golden ticket” to health. High fitness not only extends lifespan but also enhances healthspan, the period of life spent in good health.

Balancing Fitness with Other Health Practices
While achieving high fitness levels is essential, it doesn’t mean other aspects of health should be neglected. Nutrition, weight management, and attention to any specific health conditions like high blood pressure or cholesterol remain important. However, time is limited, and prioritizing fitness provides the greatest return. For most people, focusing on fitness first will yield significant health improvements, allowing secondary strategies—like better sleep hygiene or dietary supplements—to complement an already strong foundation.

The Bottom Line: Major in the Big Things
In a world full of wellness trends and “quick fixes,” it’s easy to get lost in minor health tweaks that have limited impact. Before considering new gadgets or the latest health craze, take an honest look at your fitness level. Small gains in fitness can yield big rewards, so even if you start with just a daily walk, you’re setting yourself up for meaningful health benefits.

High fitness levels are more than just a health trend—they’re a proven way to live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life. Once you’ve made strides in this critical area, you can look at other health enhancers. But fitness is the major thing, the one factor that most people should focus on first for maximum impact.

September 04th, 2024

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/september-04th-2024

https://www.ralfiwan.com/blog/september-04th-2024#comments

Uncategorized

Managing Fitness and Recreational Markets Exploring Fitness & Recreational Markets: A Look Back at the Summer Semester 2024The Summer Semester 2024 at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences in Berlin has come to a close, and what a journey it has been!
