The physical fitness of children and young people is an important issue as many of them are overweight, have a poor diet and do not feel like exercising. In recent years, the HYROX training approach has gained popularity and is successfully used by many adults. This discussion looks at whether HYROX training is also suitable for children and what the health benefits and risks are.
Health problems in children:
Today's children's lifestyles are characterised by physical inactivity and poor nutrition, resulting in many of them suffering from obesity and other health problems. Obesity is an important risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and other diseases. Physical activity is an important factor in preventing obesity and improving cardiovascular health in children and adolescents.
HYROX training for children:
HYROX is a training approach that consists of different fitness disciplines. The HYROX Challenge consists of eight exercises that are performed on a specific sequence. Each exercise is performed for a set amount of time and there are short breaks between exercises. The eight exercises are: Running, Rowing, Pull-ups, Push-ups, Cycling, Burpees, Wall Balls and Sled Pulls.
Advantages of HYROX training for children:
1. total body workout: HYROX is a total body workout that uses all major muscle groups. This can be particularly beneficial for children as they are still growing and a holistic workout can help strengthen the skeleton and muscles.
2. varied training: HYROX training consists of different exercises that are all coordinated with each other. This can help keep the workout varied and motivating, which is especially important for children as they often quickly lose interest in exercise.
3. improving cardiovascular health: A study by Schmidt et al. (2021) has shown that HYROX training produces significant improvements in cardiovascular fitness. Good cardiovascular health is important for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and can help keep children healthy later in life.
4. social interaction: HYROX can be a way to get children and young people to exercise and socialise in a group. This can help children and young people to enjoy sport more and to do it for longer.
A HYROX like fitness event, which is initiated by Oberschule Rauschwalde's PE teacher Amadeus Jedrinewski and Ralf Iwan is set to be introduced as a pilot project in schools in Görlitz in July 2023. This fitness race is tailored to students aged between 12 to 17 years old and consists of 6 times 600m running and 6 workouts in between the running. The workouts include various exercises such as push-ups, air squats, and burpees, which are designed to challenge and improve the students' fitness levels.
The HYROX fitness event is a unique and exciting opportunity for students to challenge themselves and improve their physical health. It promotes the importance of physical activity and fitness among young people, who are increasingly leading sedentary lifestyles. This pilot project is a great initiative to encourage students to engage in physical activities and lead a healthier lifestyle.
The success of this pilot project could potentially lead to the HYROX like fitness event being rolled out in schools across the country.
This would be a great step towards addressing the growing concern about the fitness issues of children and teenagers in today's society. By introducing programs like HYROX, schools can play a crucial role in promoting and encouraging physical activity among young people.

I have already dealt with this topic in the last course with my students: Fitness, is the fastest growing "sport" in the world. despite the COVID pandemic. The demand for fitness is not only for gyms, fitness studios, CrossFit boxes, micro,- or yoga studios. Fitness competitions are becoming more and more popular. Although there has been a slight dip in participation rates due to COVID in 2020 and 2021; most competition formats have come out of the crisis in good shape. Whether Crossfit Games, Spatan Race, Mudder Games or other OCRs.
One competition format that has established itself in recent years - not only in Germany but throughout Europe - is HYROX. The target group are the millions of worldwide athletes who call Functional Fitness their sport. Up to now, there have hardly been any comparable, measurable fitness events for everyone. HYROX, that is the ultimate challenge: A perfect combination of strength, endurance and speed, for all performance and age groups!
I have been following the event since 2019, when I listened to a podcast with one of the founders of the fitness series, Moritz Fürste, Germany's most successful hockey player. Fürste was able to explain the motivation and concept of the event in the sports business talk and convinced me not only from a business point of view. Since I have a background in athletics - both as an athlete and coach - I fully understand the concept of 8x 1km running in combination with 8 workouts.
Inspired by the talk and the concept, I started training with the goal of completing a HYROX competition myself in April 2020. Due to Corona, of course, that didn't happen for a while, but in September and November 2021 competition was calling: I started in Leipzig and Berlin!
Having an idea and a concept is certainly one thing, but to successfully put such a concept into practice a completely different one!
HYROX or better, the company UpsolutSports GmbH from Hamburg, which is behind the concept, has succeeded greatly! It was a great experience and I had the opportunity - besides the races - to chat to some other athletes and officials. Great success for the event - at least the two events I competed in.
This winter 2022/23 HYROX starts into its 4th season. The DACH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) countries are the core of the event calendar, so are Spain, Netherlands and the UK. Even in the USA, the largest fitness market in the world, there have already been a number of successful events. Chicago, Dallas, New York or Las Vegas. All first-class organized events, which find more and more enthusiasts.
I will also also participating again this season and have booked my tickets for two events initially. More to come maybe in 2023.
In addition to the sporting side, HYROX remains a very interesting research object as a business case in the field of fitness events.
Berlin is certainly one of the best cities in the world - as ong it is summer! Wintertime in the german capital is not my preferred time I have to admit and winter plus the corona lock-down in Germany is really special. However: At the end of January 2021 we had at some snow in Germany and (as far as I can remember) the first "real" snow (more that 10cm) in Berlin sind winter 2009/10. So at least a good time for runs in the forest and enjoying some sports and fresh air.
During the corona-lockdown obviously all gyms and sports-clubs have been closed, so working out has to happen at home or on the nearby football pitches. An absolute must every other day is the run in the nearby forest. Improving the stamina, increasing the aerrobic capacity and improving the overall health system.
However, I am looking forward not ony to the end of the lock-down in Berlin but also the spring and summer 2021 !
